Described by Melanie herself as the best film she has ever

worked on, 'Snakeskin' was the first time Lynskey had taken

the lead role in a movie since 'Heavenly Creatures'.  It also

took her back to New Zealand.

A road movie, 'Snakeskin', directed by Gillian Ashurst, tells the

story of Alice and what happens when she and her driving

companion pick up an American hitch-hiker. Alice has always

longed for excitement, but the fun soon turns into a nightmare

as she begins to realise her dreams are at odds with reality.

Nominated for Best Actress at the NZ Film & TV Awards,

Lynskey lost out to her one-time co-star in the film 'Heavenly

Creatures', Sarah Peirse, who was also employed to be her

drama coach during the filming of 'HC'.  A hit movie in the

country in which it was filmed, 'Snakeskin' unfortunately failed

to find a global audience.
