Released in the latter half of 2003, 'Shattered Glass' was
named by some critics as one of the Top Ten films of the
year. Initially, Melanie was not originally considered for the
role of Amy Brand. The director, Billy Ray, had chosen Maggie
Gyllenhaal for the part.
However, due to her commitment to 'Mona
Lisa Smile', she
had to drop out of 'Shattered Glass'.
Lynskey was then
approached. As in most US films, Mel
isn't given the chance to
really stretch herself as an actress.
It is a good performance
that she gave, but it didn't make full
use of her ability to be
something other than a shy, mousy girl.
Her performance was
at its strongest when she was acting
alongside Chloe
Sevigny. Her and Chloe seemed to
work very well together.
This also seemed to be the case with
her and the main star of
the movie, Hayden Christensen, fresh
from his unfair
onslaught from the movie critics for
his performance in 2002's
'Star Wars - Episode II: Attack Of The
Clones'. In her eyes was
a mixture of jealousy of Hayden's character,
the young New
Republic journalist, Stephen Glass, who
concocted twenty-
seven of the forty-one articles he wrote
for the magazine, and
attraction to him.
