Released inbetween 'Ever After' and 'Coyote Ugly', 'Detroit

Rock City' was the least commercially successful of

Lynskey's Hollywood ventures. Nevertheless, it is very

entertaining to watch.

The plot centred largely on four boys who are determined to

see their idols KISS in concert and about their adventures

along the way. Melanie plays Beth Bumsteen, the love interest

of Sam Huntington's character, Jam. Her character's name

was taken from a song by KISS.

Melanie broke new ground in the teen comedy genre by

getting it on in a confession box with Sam. The scene became

popular and controversial in equal measure and was later

emulated in the 2004 US teen sex comedy 'Eurotrip'.

By her own admission, when she got the part of Beth,

Lynskey had never listened to any of KISS's LPs. In spite of

this, she managed to get into character and by the time the

cameras were rolling, she was totally the part, a rock chick

from the 1970's, which explains her shirt. As well as

acclimatising her to making movies on American soil, 'DRC'

also saw her forge fresh friendships with Clea DuVall and

Natasha Lyonne. They once spent a night on the town in Los

Angeles in a limousine after a KISS concert that they had been

given VIP tickets to and partied like other A-List Young

Hollywood actresses. Some months later, the three of them

would be working together on the set of 'But I'm A

Cheerleader!'.
